Saving a Disk Image Over the Internet

The easiest way to save a disk image over the Internet is to utilize a Virtual Private Network (VPN). The VPN features in Windows make it almost as easy to save a disk image to a remote computer as it is to save it locally. This makes it easy to provide a remote backup copy of a disk, whether from a laptop or a desktop system, to a secure remote location.

Using the later editions of Windows (Windows NT 4.0 with service pack 6a, Windows 2000 and Windows 95/98/ME) you can set up a VPN by going to the start|control panel|network and Internet connections, choosing dialup and VPN settings and clicking 'add'. On a Windows XP system, you go from start|settings|network connections to the new connection wizard. In either case, Windows will walk you through establishing the VPN connection.

The image can be saved to any networked computer, so long as one computer at the other end of the link is configured as a VPN server that links the corporate network to the Internet. Configuring a VPN server is essentially no harder than setting up a VPN client. Basically you need to configure the server to allow a VPN connection through the firewall, set up the VPN server, set up the user account and provide permission to the user to use the VPN connection. The Windows VPN server comes with a wizard to walk you through that part of the process as well.

When you get down to it, saving the disk image once the VPN connection is established with Acronis True Image is the same as saving the image to a local disk.
