Retain your data with Acronis PartitionExpert 2003 PE

To make a hard drive manageable it makes sense to divide it up into a number of partitions.

Each partition can be treated as a separate drive within Windows. Ordinarily, creating partitions destroys any data stored on a drive, although it can also be achieved when installing Windows. However, if you already have Windows installed and want to partition your drive, Acronis PartitionExpert 2003 PE will help.

The key benefit to partitioning is that it enables you to store personal files away from Windows. This means that, should you ever have to reinstall the OS, you'll be able to do so without losing data.

When you launch the program you'll be presented with a list of the drives you have installed, and you can use the wizards to the left of the screen to perform various partitioning activities. If you only have one hard drive formatted as a single partition, run through the Create Partition wizard and select the option to create a partition using existing free space. You can then choose the size of the partition. You may want to use all available space, but if you want to create additional partitions you'll have to use just a portion before choosing the type of partition that should be created. You can then assign a drive letter a label and a few moments later you'll have a new drive that can be accessed through My Computer or Explorer.

Once you have created two or more partitions, you can distribute space between them using the Increase Free Space Wizard. You can even use the Copy Partition option to create a clone of an existing partition for back-up purposes.
